Invisalign can be a fantastic way to straighten out a smile, but it requires effort on the patient’s part to achieve the intended results. The system works through a sequence of clear aligner trays designed to fit over the patient’s teeth and push them into gradually better positions. However, it is possible to lose an aligner tray after removing it. Here’s what to do if you ever lose an Invisalign clear aligner tray.
The First Steps After Losing an Aligner
If you can’t find your aligner, the first thing to do is to have a good look around. Check your pockets, retrace your steps, and carefully review any tables you’ve sat or stood next to since removing your aligner. When things are lost, it is often because they were placed somewhere rather silly. In many cases, someone removes their aligner to eat lunch and places it on a napkin or paper towel next to their dining area. This can make it too easy for an aligner to get swept up and thrown in the garbage.
If you’ve checked everywhere and still can’t find your aligner, call your orthodontist, explain the situation, and ask for instructions.
What Your Orthodontist Will Probably Say
What your orthodontist recommends will likely have a lot to do with how long you were wearing the lost aligner. If you just started wearing it, they might tell you to simply go back to wearing the previous one until a new tray can be manufactured. If you are near the end of wearing the lost tray, your orthodontist may tell you to just start wearing the next one. In any case, it’s important to not go without wearing any aligners, as this will allow your teeth to shift out of position and undo the orthodontic progress you have already made.
How Can I Avoid Losing an Aligner?
While clear aligners can be easy to lose if you’re not careful, there are a few methods you can use to easily keep track of them. These include:
- Keep your aligners in a dedicated area when you’re not wearing them.
- Refrain from removing your aligners from your mouth unless it is necessary.
- Never place your aligners on a table or lunch tray or wrap them in a paper towel or tissue.
- Carry an aligner case in your pocket so you always have a safe place to store them.
In order for Invisalign treatment to be successful, the patient must wear their aligners as required. If they can stick with the planned course of treatment, they will be rewarded with a beautiful smile that will last for life.
